What Is Pulp Capping?
Pulp capping is a restorative dental procedure used to protect the inner tissue of a tooth — the pulp — when it has been exposed or is at risk of exposure due to deep cavities or trauma. At Brookwood Endodontics Tuscaloosa, Dr. Adam Powell offers pulp capping for dental cavities as a minimally invasive treatment to preserve the natural tooth and prevent the need for more extensive procedures, like root canals. How Is Pulp Capping Performed?
During a pulp capping procedure, the area is first numbed to ensure your comfort throughout the treatment. The decayed or damaged parts of the tooth are then carefully removed, and medication is applied directly to the exposed pulp tissue to encourage healing and prevent infection. A protective layer, such as a filling or crown, is placed over the pulp to seal it and shield it from further harm. The process is generally quick and involves minimal discomfort. While mild sensitivity may occur afterward, it typically subsides with time. Following post-treatment care instructions is essential for the success of your pulp capping procedure.
What Are the Benefits of Pulp Capping for Tooth Preservation?
Pulp capping offers numerous advantages by safeguarding the tooth's pulp and encouraging natural healing. These benefits include:
- Preserving the tooth's vitality, eliminating the need for extraction
- Preventing the spread of further infection or decay
- Promoting the growth of new dentin for natural restoration
- Reducing the need for more invasive treatments, like a root canal
- Providing a cost-effective approach to managing tooth damage

I had been dealing with excruciating pain in my mouth for a long time and I was referred here by my primary dentist. I was nervous at first, but everyone here was so incredible. They got me in for a last minute appointment and stayed late to help me out. Numbing injections normally don’t work on me, so dental procedures have always been a nightmare. But Dr. Stephen Thomas is a miracle worker and made it where I barely felt anything. 10/10.They just need an office cat and it would be my new favorite place!
I received wonderful treatment from every employee that I encountered, on the phone, and in the office. I have used them in the past, and if needed, I will choose them again in the future.
